Introduction: Perfectionism, characterised by the pursuit of high standards and excessive self-criticism, has been linked to various psychological disorders. Dysfunctional cognitive schemas (EMTs), which originate in childhood, may contribute to the development of this trait. Aim: to determine the influence of EMTs on perfectionism in a sample of 1,242 Mexican adults. Method: Quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and descriptive study. Instruments: Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and Young’s Schema Questionnaire. Results: The findings revealed significant correlations between EMTs and perfectionism, with unattainable goals and negativism/pessimism standing out as key predictors. EMTs significantly predict perfectionism (Nagelkerke’s R² = 0.425). The schemas of unattainable goals (OR = 1.192, p < 0.001), negativism/pessimism (OR = 1.095, p = 0.007) and failure (OR = 1.078, p = 0.005) were the strongest predictors. Conclusion: It is concluded that early maladaptive schemas influence the development of perfectionism and its impact on mental health
